The Oculus Quest 2 has been a big hit for Facebook since it was released in September 2020. Lighter, user-friendly, and way cheaper than its predecessors, it has received positive reviews and delivered impressive sales in a short space of time. IN fact, it has outsold every other Oculus VR headset combined.

But with the Quest 2 being a wireless VR headset, one of the big concerns has been around battery life. How long does it take to charge? How much gameplay can I get between charges? Is there anything that can be done to optimise battery life?

How long does it take to charge the Oculus Quest 2?

The Oculus Quest 2 will take around 2.5 hours to achieve a full charge. You can choose to charge it either using the USB-C adapter that comes in the box, or a Quest 2 charging dock for the headset and controllers.

Oculus does recommend using the charger that is supplied with the headset. You can also monitor the progress of the recharge by checking the Oculus App, or going to Oculus Home via VR.

Once the Quest 2 is fully charged, you can expect between 2-3 hours of battery life. It's closer to 2 hours for games, and 3 hours if you are watching films or other media.

How to maximise Oculus Quest 2 battery life

Oculus has provided some tips to try to get the most out of the battery on your headset.


  • When the device is not in use, fully power it down, rather than leaving it on sleep mode. To turn it off, hold the power button until the indicator light goes off, and you hear the power down chime.
  • Make sure you don't overcharge your headset, by unplugging it once it is fully charged.
  • As we highlighted above, make sure you use the charger that came with your headset.

One additional option for extending the playing time of your Oculus Quest 2, is to consider the Elite Strap.

This add-on comes with an extra battery built-in. It can potentially double the amount of playing time available between charges.

You can still monitor battery life, either with a combined measure, or individual measures for the Elite strap battery and the internal headset battery. The Quest 2 will first use the battery in the Elite Strap before using the internal battery.
